Gail Deery teaches papermaking in MFA program fall semester

The MFA Book Arts + Printmaking program is proud to announce artist and papermaker Gail Deery will teach a newly developed course, The history and craft of handmade paper. This course instructs students in the history and practice of hand papermaking: the historical study of paper composition; conservation techniques; and the study of fibers and papers best suited for printing. This course will further elevate student knowledge in the field of conservation and its associated professional practices. Participants will gain knowledge in the history, conservation, and artistic relevance of paper, including the review of historic and contemporary applications of hand papermaking. Deery developed this course specifically for students interested in historic and artistic relevance of handmade paper in the context of both application and archeometry. This is a thorough introduction to the study of production methods of paper and fiber, furthering an understanding of properties of permanence in book arts, library and archive conservation, collections and artistic process.

Gail Deery is a Professor in the printmaking department at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, Maryland where she served as Chair of the department for nine years. She received her MFA in Visual Arts from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. At MICA, she teaches courses on printmaking, papermaking and book arts. She is also Co­Director of Dolphin Press & Print, a collaborative press housed in the Printmaking Department at MICA. As a writer, she is a recent contributor to many publications on paper including a recent essay for Social Paper, Hand Papermaking in the context of Social Engaging Art.

Her artwork can be found in private and public collections including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the French Ministry of Culture in Belgium, the New Jersey State Museum, the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, the Newark Public Library, the Brooks Museum of Art, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. She has received two Visual Arts Grants from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, as well as a Jerome Foundation Fellowship. She has lectured and consulted on print, paper and collaborative projects both internationally and regionally. Over the past twenty years, she has developed intensive study and work programs to Ecuador, Jamaica, South Africa, Belgium, Italy and Spain. Currently, she is conducting research on medieval book forms and contemporary applications thereof as well as the larger discourse that revolves around the codex.
