MFA 2004
Katie Baldwin is a printmaker who has traveled to several countries as an artist in residence, including Japan, Mexico and Cuba. She has received grant funding through several organizations including the Leeway Foundation, the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, the Barbara Deming Foundation and the Independence Foundation. She received a travel grant through The Center For Emerging Visual Arts to travel to Poland in the summer of 2009. She was an artist-in-residence at the Women’s Studio Workshop, her work was included in a group exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and she has had a solo exhibition at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art. Her work is included in numerous special collections, such as the Fine Prints Collection at the Library of Congress in Washington DC, the Works on Paper Special Collections at the Free Library of Philadelphia and the Seattle Arts Commission Small Works Permanent Collections. She was a 2008 recipient of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowship; 2010-11 she was a Stein Fellow at The Center for Book Arts in New York; at present she is the Victor Hammer Fellow at Wells Book Arts Center, Aurora, NY. MFA 1992
Denise Carbone teaches the Book Arts: Concept and Structure and Book Methods classes at the University of the Arts and also many workshop on various binding structures both historical and conceptual as well as classes on preservation enclosures and unusual box structures. She is currently the book conservator at the American Philosophical Society Library in Philadelphia, the first learned society founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1743. The books range from printed 15th century astrological, medical and religious text to 20th century manuscripts. Her background in printmaking and papermaking inform her investigation into the tactility and visual and mechanical ingenuity of books and paper. She takes interns on a regular basis, inspired by her mentor Hedi Kyle and her many other teachers to impart the knowledge she has learned in her seventeen years of study. She has a studio in New Jersey where many unusual experiments happen. Lately her interests are in the alchemical concoctions of manuscript inks. The process is compulsive and requires taking risks, which result in unpredictable outcomes. Intrigued by the reactions and the unsuitability of the material, she looks forward to seeing change in twenty years. She also experiments with non-silver processes in combination with the book object and uses a Vandercook #3 letterpress for both experimental and traditional letterpress printing. She exhibits her work periodically; her books and prints are in a number of private and public collections. |

Macy Chadwick is originally from Rhode Island and now resides in Oakland, California. After receiving her MFA, she assisted book artist Julie Chen at Flying Fish Press in Berkeley for three years. She currently creates limited edition artists’ books and prints in her letterpress studio in Oakland, and teaches classes at Academy of Art University in San Francisco, San Francisco Art Institute, and San Francisco Center for the Book. She was an exhibitor at the Codex International Book Fair in Berkeley, California, and her recent shows include the Fine and Dirty Letterpress Show at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, and Rebound at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art. Her work is in prominent collections in the U.S. and abroad, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, Yale University Special Collections, and University of Washington, Seattle. Most recently, she taught a Book Arts summer study abroad course for the Academy of Art University in Umbria, Italy, and completed a two-week residency at the Venice Printmaking Studio. Amanda D’Amico came to the program with a BA from Sarah Lawrence College, where she studied visual art and European history. Upon receiving her MFA, she took over the Imaging Labs at UArts and two years later became the head printer in the Borowsky Center for Publication Arts where she works with students and artists from multiple disciplines. In 2009 she co-organized the Hybrid Book conference, an International book arts conference and fair held at UArts, to coincide with the MFA Book Arts Printmaking program's 20th anniversary. Geoff DiMasi leads up P'unk Avenue (punkave.com), an interactive firm with clients such as Duke University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation. They are also responsible for Apostrophe (apostrophenow.com ), an open source CMS built in the Symfony web framework. He also is a co-founder of Independents Hall (indyhall.org ), the coworking space in Philadelphia. Along with co-founder Alex Hillman, he has been instrumental in guiding the formation of other coworking spaces including Beehive Baltimore. As part of his role as all-around community rabble-rouser he organizes the Junto (junto.org), co-organizes Ignite Philly (ignitephilly.org), and lends a hand in coordinating events like BarCamp Philly (barcampphilly.org ). Other community experience includes founding a civic association in South Philadelphia, serving on the marketing committee of the board of the Free Library of Philadelphia, and being an artist and board member of Vox Populi, a respected cooperative gallery. He has deep experience in design and communication that go back to his first job out of college with Rolling Stone magazine. He was a full time Multimedia professor at the University of the Arts for several years and currently serves as an adjunct member of the faculty. |

Brad Freeman is a photographer, offset printer, book artist, and the founder (in 1994) of JAB, the Journal of Artists’ Books. The mission of JAB is to raise the level of critical inquiry in artists’ books. JAB is now published at the Center for Book and Paper Arts, Columbia College Chicago where Freeman is Studio Coordinator. The current issue is JAB29 (spring 2011). He has had numerous residencies including Visual Studies Workshop, Djerassi Foundation, Institute for Electronic Art, and Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Recent exhibitions and book launches include Boekie Woekie in Amsterdam, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and San Francisco Center for the Book. His work is held in many national and international collections. His recent artist’s books include Wrong Size Fits All (2010), Nether Wallop (2008), and CUBA, a collaboration with Johanna Drucker (2006). Katie Harper (aka K. Nelson Harper) received her BFA (in photography) from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her background includes extensive work in letterpress and book arts as well as many years in commercial photography and graphic design in both practice and teaching. Her most recent teaching position is on the faculty of the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, where she teaches graphic design and fine printing/bookmaking. She has been instrumental in developing a new letterpress/book arts studio at UAFS called “Underground Ink.” Previous teaching positions have included Endicott College in Beverly, MA; the University of Cincinnati; Cincinnati Art Academy; Northern Kentucky University, and Ball State University in Indiana. She has also served as art director at Suffolk University in Boston and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishers, as well as at various ad agencies across the land. Her specialty as a graphic designer is print and editorial design. She owns and operates a letterpress and book arts studio, Ars Brevis Press, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, specializing in fine printing as well as experimental work. Jim Hinz is presently Director of Book Conservation at the Conservation Center of Art and Historical Artifacts in Philadelphia. He worked as a conservation intern at the American Philosophical Society in 1994, and as a conservation technician at CCAHA from 1996-1998. He was hired as a library conservator at the Hagley Museum and Library, Wilmington, Delaware in 1998. He was appointed head of library conservation at Hagley in 2003, where he had overall responsibility for conservation and preservation, and he supervised a staff of technicians and volunteers. While there he co-curated and designed the exhibition Raymond Loewy: Designs for a Consumer Culture, which received a NEA American Masterpieces Grant in 2005 and toured nationally. He rejoined the staff of CCAHA in 2005. At CCAHA he has provided conservation treatment on rare books from the collections of Bryn Mawr College, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Delaware, and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, among others. In addition to his work as a conservator, he is also a recognized fine artist; he was awarded the highly competitive Pew Fellowship in the Arts in 2003. Berwyn Hung is an artist who uses text, the book form, and the interaction of the participant in his work. He has taught at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga, Georgia State University in Atlanta and was the Director of Program Development at The Creative Circus in Atlanta. Currently he is full-time faculty at VCU Brandcenter. He also runs a letterpress studio and workshops with Praxium Press. His work is in collections such as The Museum of Modern Art, NYC; Museum of Fine Art, Boston; and The Victoria and Albert Museum, London. He had the honor of designing the last Nexus Press book in 2004 called Chops, which received a Seed Award, a gold medal in the book category. His work has been in exhibitions such as Daumenkino Flip Book Show. In 2009 his work was published in 1000 More Graphic Elements.

Upon graduating from the program, Chad Johnson worked at the Conservation Center in Philadelphia as a book technician. After relocating to the Bay Area in 2000, he pursued a career in letterpress printing and bookbinding. He worked for a brief period with Richard Siebert and Peter Koch at Peter Koch’s studio as well as doing edition work at Emeryville’s Havilah Press. Additionally, he worked at UC Berkeley’s Conservation Department preparing for the move of the Bancroft Library’s rare book collection. Ultimately, he became the master printer at One Heart Press in San Francisco where he continues to run prepress and production. He has taught letterpress and bookbinding at multiple institutions including the San Francisco Center for the Book, San Francisco State University, Mills College and others. He has been the president of the Hand Bookbinders of California, has done design work for the American Printing History Association, and consults various institutions on the maintenance of their presses and equipment. He displays his own original work with local galleries and exhibits in national group shows. Additionally, he does typesetting work for the Guild of Bookworkers and freelance print and web design. Sun Young Kang is a book and installation artist currently living in Philadelphia. From small intimate books to room size installations, she uses paper with its duality of strength and delicacy to create physical and conceptual space. After receiving her MFA, she moved to Pittsburgh, where she worked for the Carnegie Library as a book conservation technician from 2007 to 2010. She has presented her work in invitational solo shows at Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and the Ganser Gallery at Millersville University. She has also participated in Pittsburgh Biennial 2008 and many group exhibitions in galleries and museums, both nationally and internationally. At the Hybrid Book Fair at the University of the Arts in 2009, she received three Purchase Awards from various institutions. Her work is represented in the Yuko Nii Foundation permanent collections, the Print Collection of the Newark Public Library and the Free Library of Philadelphia, the Jaffe Center for Book Art at Florida Atlantic University, and Special Collections in the libraries of the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Washington, Wellesley College, Swarthmore College, Lafayette College, Oberlin College, and Carleton College. MFA 1991
After receiving his MFA, Matt Liddle remained in Philadelphia, working as the Typography Lab supervisor and teaching a book arts class at the Maryland Institute College of Art. In 1995, he moved to North Carolina to teach at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, where he is currently a Professor in the School of Art and Design and the studio coordinator for the printmaking and book arts area. From 2001-2005 he served as Head of the Art Department. During that period, the department underwent significant changes, including the construction of a new Fine and Performing Arts Center, the inauguration of the WCU Fine Art Museum, and the launching of an MFA program. In addition to teaching, he continues to produce and exhibit his studio work, which is a mixture of prints, artist’s books and bookworks in a variety of media. His most recently exhibited work, in the show Courier at the University Art Museum in Albany, NY, deals with the typewriter as an image making tool and the materiality of print media. He is involved with the local book arts community centering around Asheville Bookworks, and serves as a co-director of the national Paper and Book Intensive.

Melanie Mowinski began her career as an art education major at Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Institute of Art. After graduating, she taught in Arizona and San Francisco, and then served as a Peace Corps Volunteer on the island of St. Kitts in the Caribbean. She earned an M.A.R. in Religion and the Visual Arts from Yale University in 1999, before she returned to school for her MFA. Her work is in numerous private and public collections, including the Tate Modern, Oberlin College, the Love Library at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, MA. She's taught courses and workshops at Williams College, the American Philosophical Society, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and at art centers in Ohio, Massachusetts, Wyoming, St. Kitts, and Australia. She regularly participates in artist residency programs throughout the United States and abroad, including Jentel in Wyoming, Windgrove in Tasmania, Denali National Park in Alaska and the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center in Nebraska. Recently her home institution, MCLA, honored her with a Creative Project Award and the Hardman Initiative Grant. She also received a 2011 College Book Art Association Project Grant. Her work grows from her observations of how patterns, textures and tiny stories in the natural world carry symbolic resonance for her own place in the cycle of living. This process leads her to make books, drawings, collages, paintings and sculptures which explore her personal experience. Trained as a printmaker and book artist, Katie Murken coordinates site-specific installations that position her hand-made objects, books and drawings in relationship to diverse environments and audiences. In 2011 she was awarded the Alumni Travel Grant from the Center for Emerging Visual Artists for a residency at the Babayan Culture House in Cappadocia, Turkey. In 2008 she was awarded an Independence Foundation Fellowship to support the Public Author Project and received a Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation Creative Fellowship for a residency at the Millay Colony for the Arts in Austerlitz, New York. She has shown her work regionally and nationally, including exhibitions at the Contemporary Arts Center, Las Vegas; the School of Fine Arts Gallery at Indiana University, Bloomington; The Print Center in Philadelphia; the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts; and the 23 Sandy Gallery in Portland, Oregon. Her work is included in the special collections of the Temple University Library in Philadelphia, PA, and the J. Edgar Louise S. Monroe Library in New Orleans, LA. Tara O’Brien is an accomplished book artist whose work is widely exhibited and collected. Her work is found in many collections, most notably, the Tate Modern Library and the Art Institute of Chicago. Pieces range from contemporary structural explorations to traditional leather bound volumes. She is interested in conceptualizing the book and exploring its future. She uses unusual materials including ice, soap, grass, hair, shells, thread, and hand dyed papers as part of her language for expression. She believes that a narrative within a book can be something other than text and images. She is currently the Director of Preservation and Conservation Services at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and adjunct lecturer in book arts at Moore College of Art and Design. |

Besides her MFA from UArts, Maria G. Pisano has an MFA in Printmaking from Brooklyn College. She is the director of MGP Studio Arts. She had many exhibits including Maria Pisano: Books and Prints at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as part of the Book FOR(u)Ms Book Artists Series, where she also curated the exhibit Book Artists' Response to Death and Memory and delivered the accompanying lecture. Her artist’s book See Time Run: A Primer was shown in the 26th Print National Exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and her Vita Defuncta was part of the Guild of Bookworkers 100th anniversary exhibit. Her works are in many collections including the Library of Congress, the University of Connecticut, University of Delaware, the New York Public Library, Princeton University, Stanford University, and Virginia Commonwealth University. She has been the recipient of a number of artist-in-residence awards and also received the New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship. She has written articles in Bound and Lettered and other book arts publications. She has curated over twelve exhibits, including the The Elements: Creative Energy at the Hunterdon Museum of Art. She teaches all aspects of book arts, papermaking, printing, bookbinding and conservation and is adjunct faculty at Rosemont College in PA and at Raritan Valley Community College in NJ. She has taught at Rutgers University Library School, Mason Gross and at the RCIPP, and given numerous workshops in book arts, printmaking and conservation at The Center for Book Arts in NY, Oklahoma Arts Institute, the Printmaking Council of NJ, the Athenaeum of Philadelphia, at her studio, and other venues. Wilber H. Schilling (“Chip”) creates fine press books, artists’ books, broadsides, and prints— specializing in design, photography, letterpress printing, and binding. He accepts commissions and often works in collaboration with other artists. Since 1992, Schilling has worked under the imprint of Indulgence Press (www.indulgencepress.com). He earned a BA in history and photography from Clark University (Worchester, MA) before coming to UArts. His work is collected and exhibited internationally. Institutions collecting his work include the British Library, New York Public Library, Getty Center, Library of Congress, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Minnesota Historical Society, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Schilling has served as president of the Ampersand Club (Minnesota’s bibliophilic society) and as an Artist Advisory Committee member for the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Currently he is a teaching faculty member at the College of Visual Arts, the Minnesota Center for Book Arts and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. His work is featured in recent publications including Masters: Book Arts (Sterling), book art object (Codex Foundation) and the Artist’s Book Yearbook 2010-2011 (Impact Press). Paul Trautwein lives in Los Angeles, where he works as a graphic and web designer. He is currently the Web Specialist at Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles where he also teaches Computer Graphics, Web Design, and Photography. Since leaving the University of the Arts, he has experimented with digital media, developing and learning about different web based programming, or as he likes to call them: Online Books. He has maintained a list of regular freelance clients and does web production for various graphic design companies. Tricia Treacy is an artist and designer living and working outside Philadelphia, PA. She came to the MFA program with a BA from West Virginia University. Using both digital and analog methods, she merges type and image in her work. In 2000, she started Pointed Press letterpress design studio and has been working individually as well as collaborating with other international artists, writers and clients on conceptual and creative projects. Clients have included Anthropologie, Blank Rome, Comcast, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the University of Pennsylvania. Her work is included in national and international exhibitions and collections. She received a 2011 College Book Art Association Project Grant. Currently she teaches graphic design and printmaking at PennDesign in Philadelphia. Prior to that, she taught visual communications, printmaking and book arts at the University of Delaware, the University of the Arts, and Rutgers University in New Brunswick.
